Wire ropes are used in the design of two post and four post vehicle ramps to either actually be part of the lifting mechanism or to assist in the timing, synchronisation and levelling of the ramp during its use. Ensuring that the car lift cables or lift ropes are in good condition is vital for the safety of the operators and vehicle lift users
The wire rope used in vehicle lifts is normally constructed using lengths of wire (a single wire is shown in blue on the diagram). The lengths of wire are spun together to form what is known as a strand (shown in brown). Finally strands are formed around a centre core to produce what is then called a Wire Rope.
During a routine maintenance inspection of a vehicle ramp or garage lift that uses car lift ropes, the wire rope should be examined closely to determine if there are any broken wires or strands as the first obvious defect. The actual position that a wire strand break occurs along the length of a wire lift rope is very important and when a break of any kind is located close to a termination it becomes even more serious.
Another aspect that we also need to be vigilant for when analysing a car lift cable is to ascertain if there any wire breaks that are in a close-cluster to each other as this will put extra load onto the surviving wires and strands of the car lift cable. It is also worth noting that although the wire ropes are partially visible during use, there is also a considerable amount of cable that is out of sight and can only be satisfactorily examined during a thorough inspection of the garage equipment.

As a final point it should also be noted that lift ropes and car lift cables are subject to water ingress, thus corrosion and rusting on the inside of the rope is a concern. As it is impossible to inspect the inner core of the rope, clause 6 of BS 7980:2003+A1:2012 recommends that load suspension wire ropes that are over 6 years old should be replaced irrespective of their apparent condition.
